There's a NEW CASPA Essay for 2026: Situational Judgment

The CASPA application cycle is officially here, and with it comes a brand-new challenge: the Situational Judgment Essay.

This "optional" essay is one of the most important additions to your application this year. While the Personal Statement tells your "why," this essay tells admissions committees how you think. Specifically, it asks you to navigate the rapidly evolving world of healthcare technology.

The Prompt

For the 2026-2027 cycle, the prompt is:

"Describe your understanding of the role of technology, including artificial intelligence, in healthcare. How do you envision these tools impacting the role of a physician assistant, and what ethical or practical considerations should be kept in mind for their responsible use?" (Max 2,500 characters)

Why PA Schools Care About This:

Admissions committees aren't looking for computer scientists; they are looking for future clinicians who are forward-thinking and ethically grounded. They want to know if you can embrace efficiency without losing the "human touch" that defines the PA profession.

3 Tips to Ace Your Situational Judgment Essay

1. Focus on the "Human Element"

AI can analyze data faster than any human, but it can’t hold a patient's hand or deliver difficult news with empathy. In your essay, emphasize that technology should be a tool to enhance the provider-patient relationship, not a barrier that replaces it.

2. Address the "Digital Divide"

Be sure to mention the ethical implications of technology. Does everyone have access to high-speed internet for telemedicine? Do AI algorithms have inherent biases that could affect marginalized communities? Showing that you are thinking about healthcare equity proves you have the maturity of a future provider.

3. Ground It in Experience

Don't just talk in theories. Have you seen a PA use a scribe AI? Have you watched a patient use a wearable health monitor? Use a brief, real-world example of how you’ve seen technology either help or hinder care. This makes your essay feel authentic rather than philosophical.

Need a Second Set of Eyes?

This essay is 2,500 characters of prime real estate, so don't waste a single word. If you’re feeling stuck on how to balance your stance on AI with your commitment to patient care, I’m here to help.
